Well, first you really need to decide what exactly you want with a pontoon boat before you run out and buy one. Do you want a one man or multi man? Do you only plan on fishing still water or possibly moving up to hardcore stuff? I've owned Outcasts, have tried the Bucks and now own a Steelheader mentioned above and a 16ft Aire Cataraft. If you only plan on floating a river with no class II plus rapids or flat lakes then you can run with the Outcast. They spin well on axis and are a breeze. BUT...once you hit some whitewater with them the rocker hulls (similar on the Bucks, Leighs, etc..) will really be a chore. Your control is limited and you'll be bounced around. Now, say you want to run some harder runs, say the Oxbow pullout, Boulder Drop, or any such rapids/shoots across the state you want at least the Steelheader. The longer the better. I have one of the original 9ft Steelheaders and it's awesome, though heavy (my 16ft cat only weighs 20 lbs more then the 9ft). It handles the Hoh and Sol Duc in a breeze. BUT...once you hit more squirely rivers like the Toutle, certain spots of Kalama, and such, you'll want a longer boat or really be stressing it. I keep both boats depending on what I'm running it for. I use my 16ft'r as a driftboat and the steelheader as a solo boat (sometimes I run both together so someone else can fish on their own). You can go to websites above, or go to
www.nrsweb.com they specialize in whitewater type boats (aka Northwest River Supplies) They are good and have a wide variety on boats (cats and rafts) I'd suggest you buy what you can afford, pay as much as you can. You get what you pay for. I'll tell you this much, the difference between an Outcast and the Steelheader is like a little Datsun B210 and a 1999 Suburban. They don't really compare. Any questions, email me.....also talk to Steelheaderboy also........
