Salmon Caviar

With prices like this for a small package of salmon caviar its no wonder that the fish are stripped off their eggs and allowed to rot on the banks. While dealing with a "fish processors" here in Tacoma he stated that's the big part his income. Buy roe from the local tribes and sell it over in Asia for big $$$$. He actually makes more from the roe fisheries than all the processing of ocean fresh king/silver etc combined.

One more reason why they don't deserve their special rights. Pitiful. When is the federal government going to get a grip and do something...oh thats right, they still feel guilty for things that happened a 150 years ago.

White guilt has got to end. I'd vote for anything stripping them of extra non constitutional rights. Including fishing rights, casino rights and anything else extra. They live in America, its time they start living under the same constitution. Treaties can be broken for the greater good. They are outdated anyways.

Thats just wrong! And we have to have a note if we keep a few extra skeins from someone who does not want theirs..

Why is this wrong or disgusting?

The tribes are allotted a percentage of the fish on the Skokomish and what they chose to do with them is not up to you. How is stripping a chum of it's eggs for resale and putting the carcass back in the system a bad thing? Is that worse than commercially harvesting a chum then having it turned it to cat food, or some other animal food product?

Are these even wild chums, or are they hatchery raised chums?

Rotting fish on the bank will eventually turn in to nutrients for the surrounding river and ecology. Trees will grow, the ground will be fertile and the baby fish will get fed.

If you think there's an over harvest issue, take it up with state and tribal fish managers. They obviously do not think that this is an issue.

May not be illegal or even wrong but miles of PR pressure can come from this.

Some one should photoshop an old fisherman with a tear running down his cheek into that picture as a parody of the litter ad that ran in the 70s with the Indian dude crying over the garbage tossed out the car window.

Aaron totally agree! The only problem is none of the major news stations seem to really do any news stories that put the tribe in a negative light, its always propaganda about how the tribe is helping the resource to sugar coat the fact they are really just after $$$$ from harvest of the resource.

I really think if the news went to some of the "fish camps" along our Washington rivers and observed the lack of overall respect for the environment/ecosystem some tribes have, (abandoned boats left unattended for months, sunken boats leaking fuel/oil into the rivers, garbage, over harvest, wasted fish, tangled nets left on the gravel bar etc) they might really be able to break some holes in the propaganda the tribe uses to portray them as "stewards to environment". They get away with stuff that you or I would be fined for or put in jail. Now I know not ALL tribal members are like this, but there are a good number that are and any one that spends enough time on the water knows what I'm talking about.

There are bad apples in all user groups, and over the years I have seen several stories portray sport fisherman in a negative light, in my opinion its time for the media to paint a more accurate picture of the situation for all of the citizens to see. Maybe if that were the case we could see some effective changes??

I really think tribal ancestors would be rolling in their graves seeing the ways some present day tribal members care for the sacred resources of the northwest.

To an extent I can see your reasoning, but at the same time, to dismiss it is saying that this type of practice is O.K.

I highly doubt that this wanton waste would be subtracted from there allotment.

There isn't much they do that surprises me these days, but wow.

Not knowing all the facts here,I will not offer an opinion on what the situation here was, but I am certain you there one hell of a lot more waste from the commercial fleet. Problem, is we don't get to see that wanton waste. I seem to remember that the commercial bycatch of halibut exceeds the entire sport catch, and that the trawl fleet takes more then 60,000 Yukon River chinook as bycatch. Just two examples that come to mind . . .

Good points Dave, but this type of waste is worse than bycatch IMO.

This is a healthy dent to the 1-5% return to this particular watershed. It is not a mixed stock, its this rivers stock which is ultimately a much higher impact to the entire watershed and neighboring watersheds. A lot of the Hood canal rivers are in really bad shape and will ultimately count on strays from neighboring systems for re-population.

I received this pic from a fishing pard a couple of weeks ago....taken Oct. 29th in front of Seabeck...117,000 lbs of chum in 4 sets......wonder how many species of bycatch? It ain't just "them" boyz.

That's one hell of a nutrient enhancement project.

If this is from last week, then I know a little bit. One of the members left his net out over night, which they frown upon and a few younger guys came, pulled his net and stripped the fish for the eggs, which go for $8/pd. They know who did it and are trying to locate them.
In the mean time, they have been having groups of people (especially the guy who left his net out) out cleaning up the waste.
