I prefer a whole herring with 2-hook slip rig. Front hook through the mouth and out the top of the head, rear hook up high on the side about and inch ahead of the tail. Tighten the slack between the two hooks to get the desired curve in the herring for the perfect spin. Learned this method fishing for kings near Haines AK but I think its a fairly common way to rig a herring.

Cut plug also. If mooching, use setup described in last reply, when trolling, I like to leave rear hook free as a trailer.

I'm with Mike L also, mooching trailer hook is in the tail when trolling the hook is free, also a small note try a small red corkie on the leader above the herring, don't know why this makes a different but it does, try it 1 with the corkie 1 without .We stumbled on this years ago the red corkie out fishes the one without...just try it ...Good Luck

I agree with extrastout, two single hooks. Thats the way I almost allways do it. Or one single through the head and a treble trailing back at the tail.

I use a fixed rig, to single hooks 5/0 in front and a 6/0 black gammies. Plug cut, start on the short side and go up under the backbone and come out on the long side. This provides a tight spin.. Also cut and fish your bait frozen for the first 20 minutes without pulling the guts, once it thaws pull the guts and continue to fish. You will have less scale loss cutting a frozen bait, but be careful with them. We found that we were having more baits chewed during that first 20 while the baist were still semi-frozen... (TIGHT SPIN works the best by far for us)
GL3 HSR 981C, calcutta 400,,,, 60# spider-wire 35#Maxima leader, 6 foot leaders... I can go on and on.. this is by far my favorite method to fish for chinook.

Thanks for the input guys. TH, if you like the tight spin then try putting the front hook up through the chin, and out through the little triangle on the top of their head, then leave the back hook loose, it's a super tight spin.
