My limited exposure to Russians notes that, as a group, they seem to be a lot more fatalistic than Americans. I wonder if three generations of communism does that to people.

whats very shocking in watching the views of Russian drivers, is how non shallot they are to near death misses. the pedestrians who seem to cheat death by drunken vodka filled drivers, with next to no thought is creepy. it's like they spend everyday knowing today is my last.

As much as I would like to place the blame for Russian fatalism on communism, I cannot. The Russian climate is cruel, and the people have been in a state of war throughout history. It's not like communism\socialism were not contributory, it's just that they are not necessarily causal.

Good point Rev. We had a Russian exchange student from Magadan, and her and her fellow students' cultural values were a world apart from those of my daughters and the students they met from Europe and South and Central America. Strange enough to be a bit erie.

if you really want to read a very interesting book on the life as a Russian and before and after the iron curtin fell. find the book Reeling through Russia. don't recall the author. It really spells out how fawked things have been for a very long time.
