"Salmon Without Rivers" is the title of a recently published book that describes how the salmon crisis originated from the time salmon were abundant when the west was being settled to and how the decline was accelerated by greed of the settlers.

I found it quite interesting but also depressing to see how the states have managed the fisheries.

Recommend everyone browse through this text. The stuff they describe about mining, logging, sawdust dumping, fish traps hatchery mis-management, over-fishing, etc is amazing. It's a wonder we have anything left.

I read Salmon Without Rivers last month and think it may be the best book on the subject since Bruce Brown wrote Mountains in the Clouds. Very readable and the author has been a professional biologist for about a million years.

This book changed my perspective on salmon issues. If everyone read this book, salmon might have a chance of recovery. Pass it on to your friends.

Salmon Without Rivers by Jim Lichatowich, published by Island Press, $27.50 (cheaper at amazon.com) Another good book on the subject, if you can find a copy of it, is Bruce Brown's Mountain in the Clouds, published in 1982. The sad part is that so little has been done in the intervening years.

Everyone should read Salmon Without Rivers. Every piece of factual information is backed up by a source, hopefully reliably.

I learned an awful lot of historical information that I didn't know before. Once I started reading, I didn't stop until I was through.

The book stresses my favorite idea about salmon and steelhead recovery, and that is to first take personal responsibility for what you do to help and hurt the fish, then to educate, and lastly to point fingers, if ever at all.
