Hey everybody,
How many of you use slinkies instead of lead? I don't use slinkies often but there are some instances that a slinky will out perform lead. I see the occasional slinies for sale at the tackle shops, they are like $1.59 and up for 2! This seems quite high. My question to you is should I add slinkies to my product line? Or would I just be wasting my time? Any info will help.

Thanks,
Andy Matthews

Slinkies are deadly in the right situation-but, any metalheader worth his salt knows that making them is ten times cheaper than buying them!! I would stick to what is making you money already. As always, there will be a few people that buy the but most of them will be collecting dust on a roadside shelf somewhere. My 2 cents.

Andy,
I agree that they will just collect dust. I watched mine slink down the stairs just a couple times and got tired of it right away. They are quieter than rollin lead down the stairs though, but why would anyone want to do that? ..shtick ~~ P.S.(edit)- For anyone offended by this lame attempt at humor, don't be. It's no big deal. And I think a lot of people would welcome a little lightheartedness at times on here.

Backlash. What most readers would see as an obvious piece of benign humor, you see as making fun of someone. There is nothing even in Andy's post to make fun of, let alone making fun of Andy. No one was made fun of except myself- portraying a dummy! ~~ Andy, I'm gettin in better shape to give you some feedback now. I don't think you'd be wasting your time with the slinky sinkers. Any item that is of value to fishermen, such as these less snaggy slinkies, will find a market if made well and priced right. Since you claimed the ones you've seen are priced too high I don't think you will overprice them. However, since these are rather easy for guys to make for themselves, the market could be limited. Try it out. ..shtick

Hey Andy,
My opinion is that their is no right or wrong answer here...as an old (40) entrepeneur to a young one (18?) follow your instincts, some of them will almost break you, some will break even and every once in awhile you will really make some money. Be creative, think new and fresh all the time. Us outdoorsman love to try new things...let me give you a simple example. When I first started fishing Steelies...eggs were the only thing you could catch them on...then came spoons, then corkies, then yarn, then winged bobbers, then sand shrimp, nightcrawlers, jigs and bobbers and now pink worms...I am sure that is not a completely accurate picture of steelie fishing but you get my idea...come up with something new, especially something a little hard to make and shazammm...you will be busier than a .....

Well thats my .02 worth.

A good point was made here Andy. You sell stuff that people can make no problem or is already for sale. Come up with something that people have not seen. Rags??? slinkies, come on dude, if you have seen one you have seen them all.. I expect you to offer pre cut lead
next. I know a couple of top notch fly tyers and they actually have a lot of skill and demand for what they make but neither of them make a lot of money.. Have fun with what your doing but it seems like your trying to sell a gallon of gas to a gas station.

Everyone who responed,
First off Jim, I would like to thank you for giving me some positive advice on my marketing. B-run Steely, you have a point, but I will keep trying until I succeed. I don't see too many companies offering rags. Do you? I know AeroFly makes the Aeropuff, but they aren't even close to what I make. I started making my own rags because I wanted a better product myself, so then I started offering them to the public. As far as slinkies go, they are cheaper to make them then to buy them! I agree 110%. I was just asking a question. Fish Snagger, hmmm I don't know you I take it. I know John alright and I disagree with alot of his ways about going about stuff. I am not trying to be another Big Mouth Johns, but since you told me to give up, I will try even harder just to piss you off! this is my dream, well not this but in a way. I want to become the owner of my own sporting goods store and guide part time. Who are you to tell me to give that all up? I take it you are from around here, right? But how is my marketing putting more people on the local rivers? I don't see how those two are connected? GLoomis has or had a plant on the Lewis river, by Gary having a plant on that river put more people on it? I have to disagree with you on that. Thanks for all of you that responded to my post.

thanks,
Andy Matthews

Andy, I may have asked this before so forgive me if I've forgotten- been so busy. Will you either post your e-mail add. or e-mail me at ReelTruth1@aol.com to allow me to learn of your inventory of products. I am particularly intereted in quality rags and 3/8 & 1/4 oz. jigs. The slinky thing is a hard one to guess at. Easily homemade but convenient to buy for those with too little time. Good luck, Steve

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Andy,

My take on it is this. Slinkies are too easy and cheap to make at home, but rags actually take some time and effort. Kind of like trying to paint your own cork balls for Corkies. Sure you can make custom colors cheap, but who wants the headache. If your rags and jigs sell well, maybe you should devote your time to them and put your efforts into opening new markets for your existing tackle line? Hard saying without knowing how much spare time you have.

Email me. I'll be going out soon with some people who might get your brand name out in an unnamed fishing mag. with big readership here and in the midwest, which could be an untapped market for you.

Fish on...........
