Looks like Tokyo's "research program" that kills 800-1000 whales each year is going to end.

The only "research" the program has been doing is "researching" how much money they can make commercially harvesting the whales and selling them for very expensive meals in Japan.

Now we'll see if they discontinue the program, redesign the program to at least make it look like a research program, if not actually become one, or if they'll join Norway and Iceland in just giving the International Whaling Commission the finger and just harvest commercially anyway, in spite of the ruling.

I want to applaud this, but the cynic in me says they are not going to stop. But for today at least, optimism wins out...so I'll applaud it anyway. applause

Heard an interesting thought from a whale watching naturalist in Kona.

He noted that Japan is vilified for taking a miniscule harvest from an abundant species-Minkes-(some would say sustainable) while Canada and the US allow harvest of endangered Bowheads.

I have no problem with the harvest of a sustainable whale population. I doubt many people on this forum would. Its more how Japan has skirted the laws that causes issues.

Whether they have skirted laws or not they get hung out to dry for killing any whales while the harvest of endangered whales gets National Support.
