There seems to be alot of well-founded concern over the pending loss of the Hoh river gauge but is the concern necessary?

Let me explain.

The queets gauge. I've heard no one mention it as a suitable backup. As most of you know who fish up that way, the queets and hoh drainages are only separated by about 15 miles as the crow flies. They both originate from the snow fields of Mt. Olympus and have very similar basins with similar #'s of tributaries.

There is no mention of the queets gauge being eliminated so I'm assuming it's here to stay. I check both regularly and if you do to, you'll notice there flows under varying conditions are VERY similar to each other.

As one goes, so goes the other.....so to speak.

I know ultimately having the real thing is what you want but if it doesnt pan out....all is not lost necessarily.

Just food for thought.

Excellent point Eric. My biggest concern is that this is the proverbial tip of the iceberg and we'll see continued cutbacks to the gauges that don't nececessarily serve major population centers and utilities that rely on the readings for general services. But you're right; the Hoh and Queets nearly mirror each other in readings.
