Gun violence has been decreasing for the last 20 years and hovers at all time lows. You are most likely to be harmed by a firearm in the US because you are committing suicide. The next most likely cause of firearm related injury or death is because you are a black male shooting another black mail. The only massive increase is in your typical bloviating .

Actually, reviewing the FBI crime statistics in preparation for numerous times I testified in house and senate hearings, firearms related crimes have seen a steady decline.

I can provide data.

I commend the young man who responded with pepper spray. He used the only defensive weapon he was allowed to have. Oh yeah, it was a gun free zone.

I'm talking about mass shootings, the kind that seem to make the news weekly these days.

They are overwhelmingly committed by mentally unstable white men, and they are overwhelmingly committed by people who should never have had a gun to begin with.

When the answer on how to solve that problem is "arm more people", then you will do nothing to solve the problem.

don't believe I have ever advocated more guns, just pointing out that Canadian gun control didn't stop someone determined to shoot someone.

Nor did the fact that the shooter shot a bunch of people with guns.

One of the contributing factors is the glamorization of the events by the media. Nobody really speaks much to that.

Mentally deranged person + gun + non-stop media coverage on the suspect of one event = the next event. Lather, rinse, repeat.

We really need some increased emphasis on mental health, effective treatment, and tracking this data to limit availability of firearms to these folks. I see no benefit with anyone taking powerful psychoative drugs having access to a firearm. That is specifically where anyone wanting to actually cut down on these incidents needs to go first.

Sadly, gun control is almost entirely aimed at stable law abiding citizens, with little or no attention paid to the mental illness aspect.

The SPU shooter had been referred to mental health services more than once.

What's your plan for keeping/getting firearms out the hands of the mentally unstable? Who decides who is mentally unstable? Do you have to prove you are stable to get a gun? Does the State have to prove you aren't to keep you from getting one, or taking one away?

The NRA's plan is clear...everyone should carry and then we can all just shoot the unstable ones when they go haywire. That hasn't been working so well so far.

After the Santa Clara shooting I read an article that looked at a bunch of suicides in Spain I believe it was. At first their were a couple of suicides were people were jumping in front of a commuter train. And then the media went nuts with the story to the point that someone was jumping in front of a train on a weekly basis. Once the media outlets got together and decided to stop reporting it people stopped jumping in front of trains.

So yea-Dogfish is spot on!

But this is America and we know three things will happen.

1. The media will continue to go nuts every time something like this occurs. Not only does it provide higher ratings but increases the likelihood of future situations for them to go nuts over repeating the cycle.
2. Liberals will argue gun control will fix the problem.
3. Conservatives will argue more guns will fix the problem.

Feinstein introduced a bill that will allow people to file "gun restraining orders" against others if they feel they are a risk.. that will enable police to go and take guns from people, and or prevent them from owning them...

all fine and dandy...

until they start reporting everyone they are scared of, dont like, just want to mess with ect, and spam the courts with bogus cases that will take rights away from people that werent going to do anything wrong...

hopefully it doesnt pass, its called the Pause for Safety Act:
