I inherited a number of rifles from my dad. I'll probably be keeping all, or most, because he built them. Currently, I generally bowhunt but plan to do some target shooting and, later on, hunting.

The question involves the scopes. They seem to be "too high" and so I need to raise up my head off the cheekpiece to see though them well. Do scope mounts come in different heights? Should I take one, or all, into a gunsmith to find out how to properly set up the scope for me?

I sort of tumbled to this problem when he and I went shooting once. He would hit the bullseye. When I used the the gun, I had a really pretty group 6" low and 6" left so I know I need to make some changes.

Thanks.

Sometimes the real high scope mounts are that way to allow you to also see the iron sights underneath the scope as a back up. I have seen and shot them on lever actions.

None of the rifles have iron sights. I'll check out the heights.

Mount heights are usually prescribed by the scope's objective diameter to just clear the barrel, plus Butler Creek-type cover clearance if you're so inclined. Like 2Many said, ends up about 1.5" above bore centerline for sporter barrel contours and 40-ish mm objective bells. Talley Lightweights are a nice way to go on utilitarian rifles. Probably low or medium. Unless you've got a Hubble on a BR rifle....
