Heard from at tug boat cook I know that there were tons of "silvers" jumping off Jeff Head this week. I suspect these must be Lake Washington-bound sockeye. As this area opens this saturday, I thought I would give it a try for sockeye and C&R kings, since the south sound has been pretty slow for summer kings so far. Anyone know if sockeye can be effectively caught in the salt. I was told to fish a #2 red hook 24" behind a dodger, real slow, down 40 feet. Does this sound right? Thanks in advance for your help on this. Chip Goodhue

check your regs carefully, There is a line from Point Wells to Meadow point to West Point to Alki Point and all waters east of there are closed to salmon fishing untill at least August 15. Maybe if you fished just off Meadow Point or West point but just west of that line you could have some success.

Actually, the fish jumping around Jefferson Head are most likely Coho Salmon. Resident fish moving up from South Sound, most of them around 3 pounds. The Sockeye run travels down the East side of the Sound.

The bare hook does work for sockeye in the salt, however, you will get only about one sockeye for every hundred, yes, hundred smolts. I don't suggest a #2 of all things as the smolts will probably inhale it all day and end up as seagull food.

Why settle for one when you can have hundreds?
