I have a 16' Willie, I have never applied Coat-it to the bottom of it since it had Coat-it from the factory. I was looking under it the other day and I noticed that it was flaking off in a few spots and looks like it needs 1-2 new coats. My question is How many coats should I apply, and How many coats can a can cover. At 30-40 bucks a can I dont want to buy to much. I will probably need to sand since it doesnt look like the manufacture prepped the bottom very well the first time (flaking in spots). Any suggestions on what to do?

I found that one can would cover my Willie with a thin layer. I let it cure then applied a second can.
The boat was new. If yours has most of the bottom covered and you only need to touch-up then I imagine one can would be enough.

Qwicksticks:

I've always bought the stuff by the quart for $18-19 so if your paying $30-40 you must be buying by the gallon??? I'll assume you are.

Like you, I got a very thin coat on the bottom of my boat (a 98 willies) and it was immediately apparent that I would need more coats for effective protection. If you will run rivers where banging rocks is unavoidable put at least 2-3(quarts) coats on. I currently have 3(quarts) coats on the bottom of my boat and I find that sufficient. If I center-punch a rock (ouch!) and some coat-it gets removed, it is a simple affair to slap some more on as a patch.

Before putting on the new stuff though, it is VITAL that you sand the old stuff with 50-60 grit sandpaper roughing up the old and sanding away any flaking material. I use an orbital sander and it is worth the effort.

I don't know that you would need the entire gallon if that's what you have.....that's why I buy by the quart so I don't end up with excess. If your paying $30-40 for a quart you need to find a new store! Hope this helps.

Good fishing.

I am still not happy with the coat it on my Willie. I removed the entire first coat that I put on after it got really flakey and now it's coming off again in the center of the boat from pulling it onto the trailer. I put 4 quarts on mine the last time and it is holing up much better than the first. I am thinking about having that spay on truck bed liner put on it with the smooth texture. I cost more but it's life time warranty will pay in the long run.

Thanks for the responses, I think I will sand it then put 2 coats on its belly and then evaluate a 3rd at that time. I do seem to find a lot of shallow spots etc on some of these rivers I am on so more Coat-It Can't hurt me.
