Society's fascination with schadenfreude needs to end. A number of times, after a person's entire past has been drug out and they have been maligned, many times it turns out that were not in the wrong. No apologies, but the damage has been done.

I was listening to an African hunter comment last night.
Pro-hunting all the way.

Then he said, on a male lion, even in low light you can see a tracking collar because of the way it interrupts the mane.
Then he said, you don't shoot any animals wearing tracking collars.
Our dentist here has shown what happens when you do.

It's been reported that the alleged poachers allegedly tried to destroy the tracking collar.

The whole thing is too bad. I cant imagine anyone being proud of killing a pet, but it happens. I have to agree ruining a guy for doing something stupid is a bit extreme. If I see a legal elk with a tracking collar, sorry, I'm dropping it right there. An animal having a tracking collar isn't a get out of jail free card (hands up, don't shoot) for them. There is no law against shooting an animal with a tracking collar in Washington. WDFW just wants the collar back. It isn't like it is a pet's collar. Not sure if there is a law against that wherever this hunt was.

Shot a banded duck. Buddies have shot collared geese. Oh yeah, I also shot a handful of banded pigeons back in the day while clearing barns of barn pigeons. Contacted the owners, some appreciated it, others were hostile. Now we're bad because we shot an animal with a tag/collar/band on it? Better not let people know you killed a salmon with an implanted tag.

You probably have academia from all over the world, conservation groups and big cat lovers etc. (Hank, for example) monitoring every twitch of the beast via satellite.
Shoot 'im and suddenly you have all of social media burning your virtual house down.

Also our Great White Hunter/Dentist has a track record of falling in with unsavory "guides" and their midnight trophy hunts.
He probably doesn't have the skillset to do his own hunt, but he's willing to buy the shot.
