My 13 year old causin, to the complete surprise of his folks, has passed hunters education. He's set up with a .308 with a decent scope and has been shooting it quite a bit so he's comfortable and proficiant with it. His Dad has never hunted before and wants me to come down and help. A little late to put together a decent plan but Sam is so excited I have to help. Not to mention it would be kinda cool for me to have a family member to hunt with for the first time in my life. Looks like I'm no longer the lonely black sheep of the family smile

Since they can't afford an out of state Wa license we will be hunting in Or. I see there is a youth only rifle hunt the weekend of Nov 7th so that's what I'm leaning towards.

Two questions.

Which west side units should I be map wigging on? And which would be the best statewide special youth hunts he should be putting in for next year? As for the special permits I'm looking for the best harvest opportunity regardless of weapon as both Dad and Son are all ready talking archery for next year.

Thanks and happy hunting all!

As far as the west side goes, the farther south you go the better. Roseburg being a good starting point. Lots of state and national forest down there. All units on the west side have good spots. however, I would Not concentrate my time in saddle mt., scapoose, or Wilson. due to the proximity to Portland.
