For you Slade watchers: It seems he's up to his old habit of sneaking "riders" onto legislation again, this week on another appropriations bill. The rider would/will prohibit any further study of the Snake dam situation. Rep. McDermott is mounting a campaign to kill the rider, but this is all happening so quickly, it could be too late. It's not even on any web site that I'm aware of, but is being sent out as an alert by many fish friendly organizations such as NW Sportfishing Industry Ass'n (NSIA). Pretty sad when someone so boldly fights the facts, for a couple special interest groups, but it's NOT too late to vote him out! What arrogance!

Here's one web site with more info, by Save Our Wild Salmon, and the Columbia and Snake Rivers Campaign. It has an easy to send email if you want the rider(s) stopped. http://www.removedams.org/SOS-site/action/washington.cfm

Thanks for posting this info. This tactic of Slades is really getting old. I found another article on the T.U. site. WWW.tu.org/all_releases.html

He did it. Another example of backdoor special interest politics by Slade Gorton.

The bill will be vetoed by Clinton. He has said that he would veto any anti environmental rider placed on bills.

Let's hope for a veto, but to help, we can write the White House with encouragement to veto the Interior appropriations bill until Gorton's rider is removed.

Additional details on the rider: http://www.king5.com/detailtopstory.html?StoryID=6744 The issue is controversial; there are benefits and costs associated with dam breaching. Economic costs and consequences as well as short term impacts to the river. THATS WHY IT NEEDS TO BE STUDIED. If Gorton gets his way, we'll never get to the truth and reality. Which sums up Gortons environmental policy.

i just don't quite get gorton and his use of riders on bills. i understand being against dam removal, even though i might disagree, but to put a rider on a bill is a sneaky way to push through legislation without it being up for full debate. to me, this seems to show gorton is afraid to debate the issue out in the open. i wonder how much of this is just election year politicing for votes.
look slade, we want decisions being made on salmon recovery done in broad daylight with the ability for us to debate the issues. just because you represent our state in the senate does not mean that we want you to act like a spoiled child who only wants things to go exactly his way, and will use underhanded and cowardly tactics to get his way.
shame on you slade... and any other politician who tries to sneak legislation through without debate through riders.
