Pack Goats are awesome. I haven't hunted with them, but I have backpacked / fly fished in WYO and CO several times with them. They are great and MUCH easier than Horses. A strong Wether can carry 40 - 50 lbs no problem. Once I get my property where I want it, I'll be looking into getting a pair.

I run into a group of bear hunters with Llamas most every year. One year I was on a ridge above them as they were packing out. Lead Llama jumps over the creek at the same time the 2nd in line puts on the brakes. Talk about a rodeofuck smile.

I'd love to hunt with pack animals just as long as they are not mine!!!

I would suggest you drop the goat idea and get a pair as well.

LOL

If the goat idea comes to fruition, keep on the lookout for a certain PP-er to be sneaking around the place looking for a conjugal visit.

Yeah yard security for keeping out "certain" people will definitely be mandatory. That's why Turkeys and Geese were invented.

Seriously, pack goats are in my future 5 year hobby farm plan. I was just showing Toff where I'm planning on putting the barn and animal corral in my yard tonight. I want a 2 pack goats; 2 potbelly pigs, chickens / ducks / geese / turkeys / pheasant / quail...whatever. I draw the line with Peacocks and Llamas. Not even Turkeys can reach the level of pure dickishness evil that are Peacocks. Llamas spit and I will be forced to punch it in the face. F' that.

Being a Colorado boy, I'm actually surprised that the relative foreignness of pack Goats in these here parts. With all of the crunchy hipster libs around here, I figured the trails would be just as littered with them as they are in Colorado. I first used (rented) them about 25 years ago going up into the Wind River Range on a 14 day trip - back when nobody really ever heard of such a thing. I was sold on day one.

Obviously, I want them to help me kill things. Go in deeper and for longer without leaving much of trace (if any). No trailers, tack or food needed. A leash and a pack are all that are required. They are flipping sweet for summer flyfishing backpack trips to be certain. So easy and you don't kill yourself with your own gear on the way up. I got old knees so I will cheat as needed.

Here's a good link for Pack Goat info (SFW): http://www.napga.org/

The biggest reason you don't see as much stock in Washington's back country is due to deadfall. If you find a trail that is cleared of deadfall expect to find a horse camp back in there come hunting season.

That actually makes perfect sense. Hadn't thought of it in that way. Just another reason for Goats. Those little suckers can climb over anything. They're Goats!

I'd be down with anyone or anything that wanted to carry my shitt around for me. I've always had to pack my own weight.

Hell, if the hunt was unsuccessful, you could always just eat a goat. They taste pretty good. Win win.

My dad's ranch manager did just that in Idaho.
He packed into the Frank Church for a 14 day tour.
Drank goat milk and bled one out once he got to the point it wasn't needed.
Seems odd.

Of course he drives a Subaru wagon as well.

He killed his pack goat? WTF? You know those take years of training to get to a trained packable state right?

Also, I know at least one Subaru driver who is pretty OK at hunting. Safely driving said Subaru is another story all together.
