I rented the Lani Waller videos from a fly shop for 2 dollars and got a priceless amount of info from them. They show just what you are asking about. Although I have almost given up flyfishing ( i.e. skunkitis ) I will probably resume the art when I am much older and more patient. Right now Ill do anything to hook a steely even if I have to use bait. I feel to be a good flyfisher it is good to possess the skills of drift and float fishing ( bait, jigs, etc.) Plus the fact that if I hooked a steely on a fly before I knew how to play and land a fish I probably would have lost the fly caught fish. I still tie flies but never use them!!! The advanced flyfishing by Deke Meyer is a good book if you have 20 bucks to invest ( check the library). -Good luck!

Hey Dutch in so much as flyfishing is about the art of angling as it is about catching fish I would suggest that you also take the time to read the various books written by Roderick Haig- Brown. Brown was the premier writer of angling with fly for steelhead in the west and is held in highest regard by many old time steelhead fyfishers. If your pressed for time your in to big of a hurry but start with Fishermans Summer, pay special attention to his teaching of the meaning of sport re. fishing = tradition, ethics, and restraint. How to books are pretty dull compared to reading Brown hope you enjoy and I hope at some time you understand fully what the expression Tight Lines is for, good luck.

since your from tacoma i suggest you take a drive to sportco and pick up these movies by jim teeny and loni walker called fly fishing for pacific northwest steelhead and fly fishing for trophy steelhead. they both are very informative. i love feeling "the munch" of a hungry native steelhead on my gloober of eggs, but after watching their videos i might put flyfishing in my arsenol. RELESEM!

Rent the 3M Lani Waller 3-tape series called Flyfishing for Pacific Steelhead. The first 2 cover reading water, presentation, fish habits, gear...etc. The third is a trophy fish tape...have not seen it but do know the first 2 tapes are informative and fun to watch.

Howdy Dutchman, Just came accross your post RE fly fishing. It's excellent to see the many responding posts from fellow fly fishers. It (fly fishing for steelhead/Salmon) used to be a fairly lonely endeavor out here on the west side rivers. If you are interested in getting a few tips from folks with a wealth of practical experience please feel free to visit www.fishingnorthwest.com/flyptrns.htm of chat with Dave Steinbaugh over at Waters West fly shop in Port Angeles.
