This posted to our BB off the news services this morning by one of our members:

Bush Considers Slade for Top Conservation Job
In the debate over who would be a better president one aspect has been totally disregarded, that is who would Gore/Bush appoint to the various cabinet posts?

This morning's political news reported that, if elected, Bush is considering appointing for the Secretary of the Interior either Washington Senator Slade Gorton or Alaska's Don Young.

What a frightening prospect!

Both men are well known for their anti-conservation, anti-environmental law, anti-wilderness advocacy. Both have a long history of opposing any action that impedes public resources from being commodified and sold. Or gets in the way of corporate profits.

Not since when Reagan appointed James Watt would such virulent anti-conservationists hold the nations's top conservation post.

This is a clear signal of Bush's attitude toward resource conservation, public lands, and what we could expect of his presidency.

It certainly bodes ill for salmon recovery and conservation.

Remember last year when there was a discussion on ban the net initiative, and some one had wrote slade about his opinion and another post had replied that slades family ownes a fishing fleet, and he said it was only in east coast and was a cannery only and does no harm or is involved in any of the North pacfic fisheries. Well maybe you should write to him about his "Sea Tasty" .
And where the fish come from to make this. Especially packed for Slade and family while netting the pacific northwest.

I keep hearing the Bush campain and republicans talking about econmic change. Didn't we just go through the biggest econmic boom in the history of the US and we all benifited fromit rich and poor alike. The deficiet is way down we aren't paying nearly as much in intrest to foriegn banks (that's what eats up our taxes anddosen't stay in the US). Housing intrest rates are low now more people can afford homes. More people working and that adds up to more people contributing to the coffers.

Econmic change? It seems pretty good right now. I would like to see us all have a slice of the pie rather than just a few at the top. Remember trickle down econmics by Regan where that got us.

It's Gore for me!

Interesting thought, Hard to imagine a senior Senator resigning in a State that has an opposition party Govenor calling the shots on the replacement selection. On the other hand the race in the house is fairly close and if the elephant dies Young would probably be very interested in Interior. I can honestly say that Don is a scarey man I have had a lot of dealings with him as a constituent and supporter and finally as a high profile organizer of opposition forces to his re election,( I guess that makes me a looser).
I predict that if Don is appointed he will start hollering about the need to dam the Hanford Reach, Start logging in the Wilderness to keep them from burning in a fire, and dredge dam and defile any and all waters to maximize efficent commercial exploitation that are either in or out of his jurisdiction!
Will all of these take place? No but while everybody is fighting over "this threat" they won't be able to get anywhere on habitat protection, or
instream flows etc.
Don is one of those that always uses the policy of a best Defense is a good offense and Don is an extremely offensive man.

For Timberman:

Then when you find yourself fishing for hatchery rags upstream of Treaty gill nets, because that's the sort that will be left after Slade finishes wiping out wild stocks by running the Interior Department, you will have brought it upon yourself. I hope you can find personal satisfaction in that.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

Slade in charge of resources? Yikes, very scary thought! If Bush wins, you are really going to see what the Republican party thinks of the environment. I bet Bush will only last one term. By that time everyone will be so sick of the blatant disregard for people who make under 200 grand a year and the attacks against the environment and the new trickle down theory (you forgot that one, didnt you? Boy, we all did real well on that one right?) that he will get tossed out. Just remember James Watt (pure stroke of genuis by Rayguns). That was Reagans nick name in California before he tricked the country into electing him president. Just say NO to Slade!.....thanks

just got back from fishing Idaho steelhead. Did OK. While talking to several locals I found out that the salmon run on the snake was the best this year since 1938. I don't think the dams were there in 1938. I have not heard anything from any GOP campaign about Slade being considered and think that this is probably not accurate. If it is accurate however, I would hope that Slade declines and lobbies for a spot on Indian affairs. I am not sure that slade would be the right person for interior. I think my vote would go to Lou Guzzo of Dixie fame. I also noticed that every farm between the cascades and heller bar on the snake had a Slade poster if anything. Not just the "rich" farmers but all of them. I still find it curious that the folks on the west side of the state are so willing to sacrifice the livlihoods and communities of the east side of the state when rarely do many of you go fish there. If the dams are killing the runs, why do I see Cowlitz river guides at heller bar every year. I can't think of any puget sound or oly pen river that is affected by the lower snake dams. Nearly every community on the east side is, however, affected by them. The lewiston-clarkston area is the steelhead capitol of the land and the people there don't want the dams gone so why do you villify Slade for listening to the folks on the east side? I think Slade agrees with the conservative view more often than not which makes him preferable to the opposition and if he wins will probably not be asked to take an interior job. The chances of replacing him with a republican vote in the senate (which Bush will need) is slim to none and both of them know that. The interior post will be offered to someone who will not damage the GOP position legislatively and you should all know that by now. Politics is and always will be about what is probable not possible. Regards,

P.S. Hooked and landed a fairly new 9.8 merc outboard in about 4 ft of water. Didn't fight much but I bonked it and headed for the launch.
