This is one of the better mushroom years I have seen. Still lots of Chanterelle's coming up, thought they were about done but a new crop just came up around my house, I have seen them in places that I don't normally see them as well.

Over the years I have pretty much limited myself to about 5 species, chanterelles, a couple varieties of shaggy's, chicken of the woods, cauliflower and winter chanterelles. I have had a mushroom bible for years but never had the guts to try new ones. I have identified hedgehogs and lobsters but never ate any. Have not seen hedgehogs in a long time.

I decided this year I was gonna eat some new ones, ate the Honey Mushrooms last week and they were excellent, I have a couple gallons dried.

Today I ate some Shaggy Parasol I got out of a friends greenhouse compost, they were pretty good, meaty and robust flavor, I will definitely eat them again.

On the same log as the Honey Mushrooms I now have "Turkey Tail" fungus coming out the end. Anybody have experience with them.

So I learnt a lesson....

My wife daughter and I ate a pan of Shaggy Parasol last night and no problems for my daughter and I but my wife came down with food poisoning about 1:00 am, she chit her pants like 7 times, puked and chit all over the bathroom, she woke me up at 4:00 am, I ended up taking her to the ER so she could get some fluids. They did tests and could not figure out weather it was the mushrooms or some other food. The bathroom is a total chit show, chit on the floor, chit and puke around the toilet and chitty cloths in the tub. Now I got to clean it all up, its turning out to be a chitty day.

All mushrooms can cause a reaction in any person at any time, Apparently this type of mushroom did not agree with her. This particular mushroom can cause gastric distress in some people as noted in its discription, apparently she is one of those people. It could have been something else all together but I assume it was the mushrooms.

Go fist yourself FishStikk. If you want you can come clean my bathroom by licking it up, if that's your thing.

Did your wife consume any alcohol with her mushroom meal? That can be a serious problem with certain fungi. This article mentions Shaggy Manes as falling into that category. I've heard Inky Caps don't pair well with booze, also.

The article notes that Honey mushrooms are not well tolerated by some individuals. Hope your wife makes a speedy recovery.

On a side note, you should put together a mushroom hunting expedition for a few of the Darkside regulars, I really think they need in on this mushroom action as well.

I stick to chanterelles. I went out a few weeks ago after work to my spot on the OP and grabbed a couple of bags in an hour before it got dark. Wife was out of town taking care of her parents. Sauteed them up and vacuumed sealed them and put them in the freezer. They should still be up until it freezes. Need a freeze to kill the fruit flies.

That's great to hear Rich. You should still do a mushroom picking trip with everyone I don't like on this site. The list is so long I can't even start but you know who they are.

Things are getting back to normal, ate some re hydrated honey mushrooms last night, not as good as fresh but pretty good. There is another set of chanterelles around my house I need to get out and pick them.

How do "funny mushrooms" and malt liquor go together? We should schedule a time where everybody on here drinks a forty of malt liquor and eats a bag of funny mushrooms comes to the DS and just see what happens. I bet there would be some epic posts, like stuff we have never seen before.

CedarR asks the right question. Did anyone drink alcohol while consuming the shaggy manes? If so, that's the issue.

Don't ever drink alcohol while eating shaggy manes. They have a substance that inhibits your ability to metabolize alcohol. It's not a problem if you don't drink but if you do, the reaction can be bad. Not fatal, just really bad. Very unpleasant.

But you know this already......

Great to hear you got lots of chanterelles. I've struck out so far this year. I may go again this coming weekend.
