I am looking at buying an 18ft duckworth sled with a mercury 140 jet. How bad is it for the engine of this boat be in saltwater, is there anything I could do to prevent damage from the saltwater to this motor. Some of my friends say that I need an offshore model to be in saltwater.

I don't know anything about jets, but I've got an Evinrude 115 prop on my boat, I've had problems in the past with the thermostats sticking shut (it's a costly repair) after I used it in the salt, even though I flushed it with fresh water. Now I use that "Salt Away" product, and I haven't had a problem since. I would highly recommend using Salt Away on any motor used in the salt.
