It really sort of depends on what you're going to use the rod for. I've yet to find a "perect" all around rod. Here's what I like to use.... For Steelhead and for small water, I use a G. Loomis #1141 (9'6") with a Cardinal # 3 spinning reel.... Not one of the new Cardinals, the old green ones. If I'm fishing heavier water, or if the fish are a bit larger, I like to use a GL2 in a 9' length with a Cardinal #4 spinning reel. If we're talking casting rods, I really think it's hard to beat a Lamiglas 8'6" medium action rod with one of the older Shimano Bantams in a size 200. Or if that's too light for what you're going to be doing, try a Lamiglas 8'6" Medium/Heavy action drift rod paired up with a Shimano Calcutta 250. These are my four "Stand By" rods. I use the lighter, spinning rods for Steelhead, and for small water type fishing in general. The other, Heavier rods mainly get used for Chinook and for the larger Silvers as well as for Chum. Of course there are times, when conditions dictate, that I will use the heavier rods for Steelhead as well (If it's big water, or if I'm fishing a c&r fishery) Anyway, I hope that this helps a bit.
