Just got my issue of STS and could not help but admire the nice cover pic. Then I noticed the hook location appears to be outside of the mouth. Is it just my imagination or is this fish technically foul hooked. Release or bonk assuming its a brat?

Was just reading my STS this morning and noticed the same thing. It appears that the jig is clearly hooked on the outside of the bottom jaw.
Not hooked inside the mouth, gotta let it go!

The fish was fair-hooked and landed. The jig fell out and was placed on the lower jaw for the photo.
Do you really think Nick would put a snagged fish on the cover?

Let's pretend your fishing with a bobber and you do catch a brat but the hook went through the outside of the jaw rather than the inside. If fish are few and far between do you keep it or let it go? I know I've caught fish on the outside of the mouth when they strike the hook wrong, especially if I'm running a stinger hook behind a worm. I've also seen the original hook come out and the fish is landed by the stinger which happened to hook into the fish during the fight. So if it's not a native can it still be wacked?

Those d@mned elitists! Following the rules and all that kind of BS! Ruining all our fun. I'd keep it. The Indians are just going to net it anyway, or some fly geek will catch and release it while it's sitting on a redd and hold it out of the water for 27 minutes for a roll of film. Or some other c-n-r fanatic will catch it fourteen times, all but insuring its impenmding death. Or it will just spawn on top of some other redd and ruin both nests. Maybe the next time the river floods it will swim into my yard and bite someone I love, or a pet, or a neighbor. Quick! Whack it fast before it gets away!! Oops...attack of schizophrenia. Or is it multiple personality disorder? I don't know. Fish on... Todd. (I think.)

Nick would never put a foul hooked fish in his Magazine. While looking at the cover pic and River info on page 3, it looks like Nick needs to get rid of the Ebonics spell check program, (Wynouchee River ), I thought it was Wynooche or the Nooch. Scott

Wynoochee, Nooch, noochee..........but not Wynouchee. What's next, the Satsoup? Note to self: Call Nick and harass him about the Wynouchee thing.

doesn't say inside the mouth, it states the fish voluntarily taking the bait so it missed and got hooked on the outside of the (jaw) still part of the mouth. now if your in oregon it states attempting to hook the fish other than in the mouth.

I quess my problem with the pic is the apperance. When the jig was replaced on the fish a little more care should have been used so as not to alude to a "not quite perfect" hookup. Appearances are 90% of what the not fishing public is going to judge sportfishers on. Not intent.
I suppose a letter to the editor on my part would be in order.

I always thought a legal hookup was from the gill plates forward. Has this changed?

Too late. A little digital correction on that cover and the jig could be put anywhere. For a price...

Desertdog,
Don't cave in. I think your question was fair and very specific. If it derailed to another "snagging" thread, it is not your fault.

My god, I swear some of you guys would b!tch if you were hung with a new rope. Get off it already, the fish wasn't foul-hooked, and I'll be sure and pass the critics' comments off to Nick so you guys won't have to get all riled up again.

Can we use Bob's formula to weigh her or should I just weigh her myself? I would only need a minute to do that. Minute man out.

Received this reply to my email from WDFW: Thank you for your e-mail correspondence to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) Fish Program.
Your question is a broad one, as it means different things per different bodies of water, and also is different per salt and fresh water, and per species. If you are referring to the difference of snagging verses legally hooking, the rules state that you must fish in such a way that the fish voluntarily takes the hook in its mouth. And almost without exception, you can keep a legally caught fish that has been hooked in the gill plate forward.
For more detailed information on this subject, you may contact Evan Jacoby in our Legal Services, directly at (360) 902-2930.
If you have further questions, please email again or call (360) 902-2700. Our Customer Service hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Sincerely, Fish Program

Pitch Pocket,
Thanks for the info. I guess Doug Kelly and Nebb were correct as well. Therefore based on WDFW e-mail the STS fish is legal regardless. WDFW Should revise or expand on the Snagging definition on page 13 of 2001-02 sport fishing rules. I keep very very few fish in WA and did not know about "gill plate forward" rule. Maybe this rule has been mentioned on other threads hence the horse!? I like the other picture better!
Dan S. As I said I was just curious since you were on the first name basis with the editor of STS, I thought may be you work there. Been subscribed for many years. Who can resist "Renew for 2 more years and get 2 free books."
Thanks.
p.s. Due to "Night Closure" rule on page 12, I surf late at night.
