... oil-for-food thread? You know, the one where a couple of evangelicals were expressing their delightful schadenfreude (is that a Christian trait? ) in pointing out France was involved in the scandal. I wanted to add to the thread, but it seems the originator deleted it. So here's a little info for those curious about France's involvement compared to other's: The Duelfer report contains a list of more than 1,300 oil vouchers that Saddam Hussein gave to more than a hundred corporations, foreign officials, individuals, and political parties around the world. - Thirty percent of the oil vouchers were issued to beneficiaries in Russia, including individual officials in the president's office, the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Russian Communist Party, members of the Russian parliament, and the oil firms Lukoil, Gazprom, Zarubezhneft, Sibneft, Rosneft, and Tatneft.
- Fifteen percent of the beneficiaries were French, including a former interior minister, the Iraqi-French Friendship Society, and the oil company Total.
- Entities in China received 10 percent of the vouchers.
- Entities in Switzerland, Malaysia, and Syria each received 6 percent.
- U.S. companies and individuals received between 2 and 3 percent of the total vouchers--some 111 million barrels out of a total of 4.1 billion. These companies were not named in the report, because of U.S. privacy laws, but were later leaked to the press.
The individuals involved: Among them: - Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the Russian Liberal Democratic Party leader, and companies associated with his party were allocated 53 million barrels.
- Alexander Voloshin, chief of staff under former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, was allocated 3.9 million barrels of oil from May to December 2002.
- Oscar S. Wyatt Jr., a prominent Texas energy investor with a long history of dealings in Iraq, received vouchers for 29.7 million barrels, according to press reports.
- Benon Sevan, the U.N. chief of the Oil-for-Food Program, received an allocation of 13 million barrels.
- Charles Pasqua, a businessman and former French interior minister, received an allocation of 11 million barrels.
- Megawati Sukarnoputri, the former Indonesian president, was allocated 6 million barrels.
Putting it in perspective: the bulk of Saddam Hussein's $11 billion in illegal revenue, collected from 1990 and through 2003, came from illicit cross-border trade and oil sales to countries in the region. Some $8 billion of that total was earned through illegal oil sales and other trade with Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, and Syria. The regime also earned $1.2 billion from unsanctioned oil sales to private companies outside of the voucher system and the Oil-for-Food program $12.2 billion over a 13 year period. Compare that to what is being spent now on Iraq weekly. How much is Halliburton and its subsidiaries being investigated for since the war started 19 months ago?

Tell the judge you only kept 15% of the money from a fraud deal and see if he lets you off easy.

first of all gh you're comparing apples to oranges..
My response earlier was just to say that the amount of money the us has spent would be a lot less if the countries mentioned in parts of the article you pasted had actually wanted to help Iraq and not steal from them. But, as you have pointed out we know why they France and others were so adamant against going into Iraq. France and others had a good thing going. They sure as hell didn't want that messed up. And the reason I mainly mention France is they were the ones making the most noise about those dirty Americans only going into Iraq for oil. Now that I think of it, you were one of those saying the same thing...
And I deleted the other post cause I knew the same people would only dig and dig to try and find some little shred of evidence to and try and still say it is Americas fault. I saw quickly by reading you post that your first response was to slam America even without any shred of.
But I still find it funny that you still try to justify this whole thing because the stealing was happening over a 13 year period. That was money that was being taken from the people. And now America is putting money back into Iraq and this is wrong how? And shut up about Halliburton already. How much was Halliburton investigated on those no bid under any other administraion? And please list the other companies that can do what Halliburton does?
Anything to hate America right GH? Anything to avoid saying, wow maybe these facts coming out are a good reason why those countries wouldn't help out?
You hate it here so much GH why don't you leave? You say you train soldiers? I really doubt it with your attitude, the hate America first one. Working in the slop hall doesn't count as training...

Oh, and by the way, Oscar S. Wyatt, Jr. is a strong Bush supporter and campaign contributor. Pmartin - quit crying, you sound like a little girl. I'm not disputing that involvement in the OFF by particular countries may be a reason they might not have wanted to participate in the war. Of course, relatively speaking, the money they gained from the OFF is pretty small. And no where am I blaming America for the scandal - only pointed out that we're not clean, either. Ya see, that's the thing about truly loving America and defending the democracy we enjoy. I choose to exercise my First Amendment right when I see something I think is wrong and want corrected. Blindfolding yourself with patriotic fervor leads to a contemptuous government that manifests itself into a fascist regime where everyone must "stay on message" and there's no room for dissent. So in reality, if you don't approve of your fellow citizens demanding a transparent government and the ability to voice dissent free of reprisal, then I believe you should leave and find an autocracy with a demogogue.

I thought the way people here wore it on their sleeve that it would be complimentary.

It was an exercise in relativity, Grandpa. Sorry if I'm typing too fast for you. Again, I'm not defending anyone, nor am I excusing anyone. Just pointing out some facts that others don't want to admit to.
