Have any of you heard about this? Americans could be stripped of their rights and sent to Guantanamo Bay under the terms of the ‘indefinite detention’ provision of the National Defense Authorization Act set to be passed by the Senate this week.

How do you feel about Military roaming the streets of America, clearly in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act, seizing people without cause or fair trail? If things blow up in this country, escalated from the protests we see today, how could this law be used against our own people? Why else would these provisions be added to the bill? Scary times...

more likely it will be used like our other laws have been designed and suit a different purpose, like the wiretapping that has caught tons of drug dealers and virtually no terroists...

I've read about this from a number of sources but haven't seen, or been able to find, the language where it specifically allows the military to act this way. Not doubting it entirely, but until I can find it, and read it myself, I'm thinking this may be more alarm tyhan substance.

I think we already have enough of a police presence in the US today, not including the HSA.

Please take note: Hank posted something relevant and timely to the thread with only a wee bit of partisanship. He musta' had a good movement this morning.

It's certainly possible that this has been overblown. That seems to happen a lot these days. Even so, the question I would ask the rest of you is this:

Even if this isn't horribly bad, what GOOD can it possibly do us? How is it in the citizens' best interests to have the Legislature spending their time writing legislation like this? From this citizen's point of view, there is more reason to oppose this than there is to support it.

Doesn't seem overblown to me given the harsh criticism and significant reaction the proposed bill has mustered.

What is the purpose? I would say the purpose is legalizing the military to go in the streets and do whatever the hell they want. If that's not it then what is? They better have a focus.

It was nice to see people from both sides of the aisle opposing it. Looks like folks on both sides were also for keeping the amendment.

Anyone who doesn't vote for the amendment to remove that provision from the Act should be considered a domestic terrorist themself...and the trotted off to Guantanamo to rot away with the rest.

I would say the 1%er's are getting very nervous these days.

We already have that provision, it's called Marshal Law.
