A slightly different kind of Chinook that is.

Yo Fly. I was flipping through some old photos for a couple of projects and thought you might enjoy a walk down memory lane.

For the past few years the CH-47 crews from Ft Wainright have helped us sling our mountaineering equipment into the range as part of an annual training program. These guys are all in the desert right now but it sounds like they'll be back just in time for this years camp/gear insert.

Once in a while they bring a Blackhawk along.

Pavehawk's are too heavy to move gear, but they tag along now and then.

Here is to hoping they all make it back safe and sound.

The rotor wash from the chinooks is pretty amazing. I have a picture somewhere taken from 17k on Denali looking down at the 14k camp when a chinook landed to pick up and injured climber. I'll see if I can dig it up.

Impending doom!

The photo quality sucks as I was 2 miles and 3000 feet away, but gives you an idea of the scale. 100mph whitewash wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't below zero.

National Guard Chinooks used to haul in a water buffalo for the 49er
council of the BSA for the annual Camporee. Several of the Scout parents
were Air Guard and they set it up on Red House Ranch near Copperopolis
. 7000+ acres of Sierra foothill to play games in. Rattlesnakes, Poison Oak,
and assorted other critters, feline, Ursine and so forth.

The belly hooks on the CH-47 (Charlie and delta series) are rated for 20,000 pounds. Mind boggling the loads those things can haul. One carries an 800 gallon fuel cell that you can shoot full of .50 cal holes and it won't leak. Cool.
