Anybody have luck with little rags. The skinny backer rod is the only size I can find in white nowadays. Also, I noticed that the jar of little rags made by Cal Stocking is almost gone at Outdoor Emporium. One of you fellow board members must've bought and tried those little things?

I've had success with the larger sizes that I have been using lately, but I have been using them in lower visiblity conditions. You all know the rivers involved. As a matter of fact I just got done making lots of the little guys for my fishing trip to the "Situk" river. It is going to be my first trip there, but my brother who lives in Alaska, who has fished it many times says that this river runs clear and small lures and jigs work great! He did say that these fish are definitly not line shy and are avid biters. Can't wait until the end of April. Sounds like I will be getting there when some of the guys on this board will be leaving. My brother will be there fishing that week also and will be waiting for me and one of our other buddies to arrive. Four days of steelhead C/R and then we fly out of Yakatat to Juneau to fish for halibut and salmon from my brothers 28 footer. Time seems to be a flyin by now and soon its off to Seatac and Hello Alaska! Later!
BTW ---- Hope I don't have one of those Bear stories to share with you all as we will be spending a few days camping on the banks of the Situk to enhance the float! BRRRR! ------------------ Steve Ng....The FishNg1 99 F-350 Powerstroke 4x4 , 18ft Alumaweld Formula Vee Sled, 115 Yamaha.

I prefer to use the smaller size rags more most of time , depending on water conditions if I need more of a profile I will add a small on top seems to do the trick, also when adding bait to these small ones I feel it gives it kind of a neutral boyancy, very natural,Good Luck

Fellow anglers, I am giving away some of my secrecy to my Steelhead Solutions, aka rags. I use the 3/8 backer rod for steelies and the 1/2 for silvers. The 3/8 is the perfect size, I cut my yarn real short on the sides so that the profile is small. I like a smaller rag. I am trying to get some smaller 1/4 backer rod for summer runs! These outta be great for the summer fish. I hate big presentations, never had any luck with bigger rags, always used smaller ones. The rags that are used for silvers should work great this season, showing them somthing new. Can't wait to try them on chums and kings too. Any questions feel free to email me. Thanks, Andy Matthews http://The_Steelhead_Solution.homestead.com

Hohwaiian, By thinner backer rod, I assume you mean smaller than 3/8". I usually use 3/8 with a sequin and yarn pulled through the bugger, but I have used the thinner stuff. I used to cut the thinner rod a little longer than an inch(1.5") with the yarn pulled through off center and a little longer when the yarn sticks out. I thread a sequin, then the thinner rod with the yarn offset up top or away from the hook. It has a little different look and I have caught a few fish on this. I have seen guys run a bead, inch and half of the thin stuff and yarn tied above the rag onto the line.
