Chris,
The Cowlitz shouldn't give you any problem as long as you keep a few things in mind.
-Mind where you drop your anchor. If you hang your anchor up in heavy current, you won't be pleased. And if you anchor up where the sleds are boondogging, prepare for a verbal barrage.
-Plan your moves early and remember your entry point is important in heavy flows. Get the boat positioned correctly BEFORE you enter the fast water and you won't have any problems.
-Keep in mind that the Cowlitz is currently flowing at 8200 cfs, which is way more than you're looking for this time of year. If you're thinking about hitting it, you're looking for something more like 4-5,000 cfs.
Anyway, like the other guys said. If you're a beginner, maybe wait a while on the Kalama, but if you're careful, the Cowlitz should be no problem. I would wait for the water to drop around 5,000 cfs before I'd give the Cowlitz any consideration.
Fish on............
On the side to Jigman: Jig, I'd like to hook up with you sometime to make that drift you mentioned. Drop me an email some time and let me know if you'd be willing to drag me along. sandbergs@olywa.net
