Is the cowlitz a driftboat friendly river? I want to go fish it and I need to know. Or is the Kalama Hard?

I would say the cowlitz is a simple river to drift. I have never floated below mission bar below blue creek. but from the Barrier to that point is big water with lots of room to learn. it is powerfull but not hard to float. I floated it several times as I was learning to row.

The Kalama, I would think about it if you don't have enough experience. it has a few spots that could get a beginner in trouble fast but with a little practice on the other rivers it can be done.

dcrzfitter,
Do you have a Willie Drift Boat? Based on your posts, I think I might know who you are.

The only tight spot from Blue Creek to the Mission Bar is the Blue Creek corner. Other than that it is pretty wide open water.

I really enjoy the float from Massey to I-5 in the summer when the water is low. Very few boats and lots of fish! Easy float.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Chris,

The Cowlitz shouldn't give you any problem as long as you keep a few things in mind.

-Mind where you drop your anchor. If you hang your anchor up in heavy current, you won't be pleased. And if you anchor up where the sleds are boondogging, prepare for a verbal barrage.

-Plan your moves early and remember your entry point is important in heavy flows. Get the boat positioned correctly BEFORE you enter the fast water and you won't have any problems.

-Keep in mind that the Cowlitz is currently flowing at 8200 cfs, which is way more than you're looking for this time of year. If you're thinking about hitting it, you're looking for something more like 4-5,000 cfs.

Anyway, like the other guys said. If you're a beginner, maybe wait a while on the Kalama, but if you're careful, the Cowlitz should be no problem. I would wait for the water to drop around 5,000 cfs before I'd give the Cowlitz any consideration.

Fish on............

On the side to Jigman: Jig, I'd like to hook up with you sometime to make that drift you mentioned. Drop me an email some time and let me know if you'd be willing to drag me along. sandbergs@olywa.net

SI,

Yes I do have a Willie!! I allso live in the Tumwater era. where would I know you from? I have a white GMC truck with the cowboys in the rear side windows. if you know me that should be all you need. they tend to be one of a kind. You got me curious now.

I agree that the Kalama as with any of Wa smaller rivers all pose their share of tight spots. The Cowlitz is a good stream to get some experience rowing. If your not sure of whats up ahead get out & walk down stream. & take a look. Follow other boats is also a good way to get down stream. Just make sure to stay back far enough in case that boat takes the wrong route. Also ask other dft. boaters about what to expect. We all started at the same place, looking at a river and shoving off. After 20 yrs of rowing I still follow the above advise and have never had a bad day floating. Search the web there are some dft boat rowing videos out there.
