Training is exceptionally important. Many own firearms but few spend comparable money on being able to secure them and fewer yet on training.

As we spend some money on training, we will only appreciate it and never regret it. Understanding use of force, and consequences of use of force, are key. Even if 100% justified and ethical, the court room time, expenses, and lost sleep are a major use of resources.

Avoidance is even better for a civilian, who is not obligated to go into harm's way.

Learning, and having available, non lethal tools, such as pepper spray, is helpful. and training is good there as well.
